We Are More Than an Organisation – We Are a Movement

Evergreen Initiative Tanzania was born from a simple belief: the world should become greener than we found it.

Originally inspired by the green landscapes of Kilimanjaro and the name of a small home street called Evergreen Street in Mwika, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Evergreen has grown into a people-driven environmental movement for everyone who loves nature and believes that protecting our planet is a shared responsibility. What began as a personal passion has evolved into a vision that reaches far beyond one place or one country. Today, Evergreen welcomes anyone, anywhere in the world, who is passionate about restoring, protecting, preserving, and exploring the natural world.

We are not defined by offices, buildings, or titles. We are defined by action. Whether planting a single indigenous tree, protecting a forest, reducing plastic waste, conserving pollinators, educating communities, or inspiring others to reconnect with nature, every meaningful action contributes to a healthier planet.

Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to leave Earth greener, healthier, and more biologically diverse than we found it.

Nature Beyond Green

To us, nature is far more than beautiful green landscapes. Healthy ecosystems are living communities where trees, soils, rivers, insects, birds, animals, and people all depend on one another. When one part is damaged, the entire system is affected.

For this reason, Evergreen promotes conservation that restores complete ecosystems rather than simply increasing the number of trees. Every project we undertake is guided by ecological sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and long-term environmental resilience. Our work seeks to restore the natural balance that allows forests, rivers, wildlife, farms, and communities to thrive together.

Planting the Right Trees

Around the world, millions of trees are planted every year. While tree planting is important, not every tree contributes equally to restoring nature.

Evergreen focuses on planting local, native, and indigenous tree species that naturally belong within their ecosystems. These trees have evolved alongside local wildlife for thousands of years and provide essential habitat, food, shade, pollination, soil protection, and water conservation.

Our goal is not simply to create green landscapes. It is to restore functioning ecosystems by protecting species that sustain biodiversity, strengthening soils, improving water retention, reducing erosion, supporting rainfall patterns, and providing habitat for countless forms of life. Many indigenous species are increasingly threatened by deforestation and unsustainable land use, making their restoration both an environmental and cultural responsibility.

Restoring Traditional Wisdom

Long before environmental conservation became a global conversation, many local communities had already developed sustainable ways of living with nature.

Evergreen believes that traditional environmental knowledge deserves renewed recognition. We actively promote conservation approaches such as agroforestry, where indigenous trees are integrated with farming systems rather than removed to create farmland.

This approach helps improve soil fertility, conserve water, reduce erosion, increase biodiversity, strengthen food security, and improve farmers’ resilience to climate change while allowing agriculture and nature to exist together instead of competing against one another.

By combining indigenous knowledge with modern environmental science, we believe communities can achieve sustainable livelihoods while restoring the landscapes on which they depend.

Ending the Plastic Plague

Plastic pollution has become one of the fastest-growing threats to ecosystems across the world. Even the most beautiful forests, rivers, farms, and mountains are increasingly affected by plastic waste that remains in nature for generations.

Evergreen is committed to building communities where unnecessary plastic use becomes the exception rather than the norm.

Through our “No Plastics in the Shamba” initiative, environmental education, community campaigns, and practical local solutions, we encourage people to reduce single-use plastics, embrace reusable alternatives, rediscover locally available eco-friendly materials, and revive traditional practices that existed long before plastic became part of everyday life.

Protecting nature requires changing habits as much as planting trees.

Protecting Wild Stingless Bees

Healthy forests cannot exist without healthy pollinators.

Among the smallest yet most valuable guardians of biodiversity are wild stingless bees. These remarkable native pollinators support the reproduction of countless indigenous plants and crops while producing one of nature’s most unique medicinal honeys.

Evergreen is committed to protecting wild stingless bee populations, promoting sustainable stingless beekeeping, restoring habitats that support native pollinators, and increasing public awareness of their ecological importance. By protecting these tiny species, we strengthen entire ecosystems that depend on them.

Climate Action That Starts Locally

Climate change is experienced differently by every community, but meaningful solutions often begin locally.

Evergreen promotes practical climate action through environmental education, community workshops, tree restoration, sustainable farming, biodiversity conservation, and locally driven adaptation strategies. We believe informed communities become resilient communities.

We also recognise that climate change affects people unequally. Women, young people, and rural communities are often among those most affected while possessing tremendous potential to become environmental leaders. Our climate justice initiatives, therefore, seek to expand opportunities for participation, education, leadership, and sustainable livelihoods.

Exploring the Green World

Nature is meant to be experienced as well as protected.

Evergreen celebrates forests, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, wetlands, indigenous landscapes, and all the extraordinary green places that remind us why conservation matters.

Beyond traditional wildlife tourism, we encourage exploration of forests, botanical diversity, mountain ecosystems, indigenous landscapes, and environmentally significant places that deepen appreciation for the living world. We believe that people protect what they understand, and they understand best what they have experienced.

A Global Community with Local Roots

Although our roots are in Kilimanjaro and our initiatives began in Tanzania, our vision knows no borders.

Environmental challenges are shared across humanity, and so are their solutions. Evergreen welcomes volunteers, researchers, students, farmers, conservationists, educators, businesses, institutions, photographers, travellers, and every individual who believes that restoring nature is one of the defining responsibilities of our generation.
